How to report Internet problems to your ISP with useful evidence

A useful support report explains what failed, when it happened and what you already checked. Precise evidence helps troubleshooting; it does not guarantee a response, a repair or compensation.

The details that actually help

Describe the problem with a concrete example: “I cannot hear the other person for a few seconds during calls” or “all websites stop opening”. Include the date, times and time zone, frequency, duration and affected devices. If you do not know a detail, write “not specified” rather than guessing.

State whether you used Wi-Fi or Ethernet, a VPN, and whether backups or other transfers were running. Include the checks you already made and their results. “Restarted at 6:30 pm; the issue returned at 6:45 pm” is more informative than “tried everything”.

Which report to download

LineaChiara generates two free PDFs. The explained report summarises observations and next checks in plain language. The technical dossier describes the method, conditions, statistics, samples, events and limitations; it also embeds JSON and CSV data as attachments.

Use the explained summary for an initial contact. Provide the technical dossier if support needs more detail; JSON and CSV are also available as separate downloads. You can export an incomplete session, provided its limitations remain clear.

Before sharing, review free-text notes, device names and addresses. Collected IP information is excluded by default from relevant exports, but information typed into notes is not automatically cleaned. The app does not send anything to your provider.

A template you can adapt

Hello, I am reporting this problem: [describe what you could not do]. It happened on [date], between [time] and [time], in [time zone]. It affected [one or more devices]. I tested [Ethernet, another device, a restart or other checks], with this result: [what changed]. I have attached a report showing timestamps, conditions and failed requests. Could you check the line during these periods and provide the findings and a ticket reference?

Only include checks you actually performed. Do not write “a fault in your network” when all you have is a browser measurement. Ask the provider to compare your timestamps with the records they hold.

Troubleshooting versus a contractual complaint

LineaChiara is not a certified measurement tool and does not automatically assign responsibility. A failed HTTP request can have several causes. One slow download does not prove that a contractual threshold was breached.

Formal complaint and certified measurement procedures depend on your country and contract. Check your national regulator’s current guidance and your provider’s process. In Italy, MisuraInternet and Ne.Me.Sys. provide the official measurement route. Keep your support ticket reference and the replies you receive.

These checks help narrow down a problem; they are not a guarantee of its cause. Suggest a correction.
