Che cosa significa jitter

Una risposta può arrivare in poco tempo e quella successiva impiegare molto di più. Una connessione con tempi regolari e una con forti oscillazioni possono avere la stessa latenza media. Per chi conversa o gioca, la regolarità può contare quanto la velocità di trasferimento.

In LineaChiara il jitter è la media delle differenze assolute tra tempi di risposte HTTP consecutive valide, nella stessa serie di misura. Non è una misura del ritardo dei singoli pacchetti di una chiamata: il browser, il server e il percorso contribuiscono al risultato. I valori di strumenti con metodi diversi non sono direttamente intercambiabili.

Una prova che aiuta a restringere il problema

1. Chiudi download e backup, lascia la scheda visibile e avvia un test singolo. Annota server, ora e collegamento usato.
2. Ripeti sullo stesso dispositivo e server usando un cavo Ethernet direttamente al router, se disponibile. Evita adattatori powerline per questo confronto.
3. Confronta le risposte a riposo con quelle durante download e upload. Un aumento soprattutto sotto carico suggerisce un problema diverso dalle oscillazioni già presenti a riposo.
4. Ripeti quando noti gli scatti e quando tutto funziona bene. Conserva anche la prova senza problemi: serve come termine di confronto.

Non eseguire due test di velocità contemporaneamente: diventerebbero traffico concorrente e cambierebbero ciò che vuoi osservare.

Come leggere il confronto

Qual è un buon valore?

Non esiste una soglia universale valida per ogni gioco, chiamata e metodo di misura. Un numero isolato, senza server e condizioni, dice poco. Confronta soprattutto la stessa misura nelle stesse condizioni e verifica se le oscillazioni coincidono con il problema che avverti.

Le osservazioni automatiche di LineaChiara usano soglie orientative dichiarate nel rapporto. Non sono limiti contrattuali o una certificazione di qualità. Se il router supporta la gestione delle code SQM, puoi confrontare prima e dopo seguendo il suo manuale e cambiando una sola impostazione alla volta.

Quando chiedere aiuto

Contatta l’assistenza se gli scatti si ripetono su più dispositivi, anche via cavo, e con più servizi. Scrivi “la voce si interrompe tra le 20:10 e le 20:20, anche via Ethernet”, allegando condizioni e rapporti. È più verificabile di “ho un jitter brutto”. Non acquistare un router solo sulla base di un singolo valore.

What jitter actually means

One response may arrive quickly while the next takes much longer. A steady connection and a connection with large fluctuations can have the same average latency. For calls and games, consistency can matter as much as transfer speed.

LineaChiara calculates HTTP jitter as the mean absolute difference between consecutive valid response times within the same measurement series. It does not measure the delay of individual voice packets. The browser, server and route all contribute to the result. Numbers from tools using different methods are not directly interchangeable.

A comparison that narrows down the problem

1. Pause downloads and backups, keep the tab visible and run a single test. Record the server, time and connection type.
2. Repeat on the same device and server using Ethernet directly to the router, if available. Avoid powerline adapters for this comparison.
3. Compare idle responses with responses during download and upload. A rise mainly under load points to a different pattern from fluctuations already present at idle.
4. Repeat when you notice the problem and when the connection works well. Keep the successful test too: it provides a baseline.

Do not run two speed tests at once. Each would add competing traffic and change the conditions you are trying to observe.

How to interpret the comparison

What is a good jitter value?

There is no universal threshold for every game, call and measurement method. A number without a server and test conditions says little. Compare the same measurement under similar conditions and check whether the fluctuations coincide with the problem you experience.

LineaChiara’s automated observations use indicative thresholds disclosed in the report. They are not contractual limits or certified quality ratings. If your router supports smart queue management, or SQM, compare before and after following its manual and changing one setting at a time.

When to contact support

Contact support when the issue repeats across devices, over Ethernet and with multiple services. “Calls break up between 8:10 and 8:20 pm, including on Ethernet” is more actionable than “my jitter is bad”. Include your time zone, conditions and reports. Do not buy a new router on the basis of a single result.
